Movemint
A deep dive into consumer-facing design for the healthcare industry with a focus on PT patient accessiblity and accountability.
Context
Movemint was comprised of three components: A HIPAA compliant EMR platform for client management, a treatment plan portal for physical therapists to create treatment plans for patients, and a treatment tracker app that patients can use to monitor their improvement and accountability over the course of their treatment plan. Design for this product took almost half of our 6-week window, meaning the actual build was completed in just over three weeks. This project involved more UX research than some of my previous projects, and I spent much more time building the different consumer-facing experiences for our end users.
Patient onboarding was an early challenge. I wanted to require as little personal intake as possible for patients, while still providing enough information for providers to properly assess and create a plan. After numerous iterations, I arrived at an intake form that satisfied both patients and providers.

The Provider Experience & HIPAA
This was my first time operating within the HIPAA compliance space, which came with some valuable learnings. I was designing a seamless experience for PTs and their clients, but could not build freely outside of a HIPAA compliant framework. This meant I had to get creative with how I designed the client experience - how I sent/stored their data, how their progress was tracked, etc. I frequently caught myself trying to over-engineer the product when I should have been leveraging existing HIPPA compliant EMRs. In the end, we housed the entire telehealth experience on Healthie, a compliant EMR.
The entire workout tracking app was built within Bubble and was able to maintain anonymity with clients. This meant no personal information (names, addresses, etc). Instead, each plan had a unique ID that corresponded with specific patients and their respective ailments (lower back, ankle, etc). The providers could create, monitor and update plans for their patients. I was comfortable with a small amount of friction for the providers for launch in order to prioritize the patient/consumer experience.

Empowering Patient Accountability
For the patient experience, the focus was entirely on accountability and gamification. Movemint was a telehealth PT practice at its core; the companion app was meant to empower patients to engage in their treatment plans and be rewarded for doing so. One of the goals for the companion experience was to gather data - not patient data, but general performance trends. Depending on those trends, providers could tailor their treatment plans to maximize engagement.
